Some common questions
How does Somatic Experiencing support me?
1
Somatic Experiencing helps with making the connection to the body and your emotions, which often will give important insights and healing opportunities.
What is a somatic session like?
2
Sessions are generally one hour, and consist of grounding, deep listening, sharing, and somatic based practices designed to reconnecting with your body. Often, you may not even realize that understanding the way your body has metabolized trauma has been impacting your life. It can be incredible what can be discovered by taking the time to be with your emotions and body, together.
What Somatic Experiencing is NOT?
3
A Somatics Experiencing practioner is NOT a licensed psychologist or medical therapist.
Somatics is NOT exposure therapy, which means that you are not asked to intensely retell your traumatic events, but rather has a slow and steady approach that is intended to allow the healing to happen within a client’s readiness level.
It is NOT traditional “talk therapy” as it tracks physical feelings. Often the brain/cognitive functions can hide or mask trauma as a safety or survival tool. It often makes non-verbal trauma more accessible.
It is NOT religious or new age, but rather grounded in biology and an understanding of how the nervous system operates.
It is NOT a quick fix or a promise to be a cure all.
Do you offer a sliding scale?
4
Absolutely! The sliding scale is below. Marinah also works in a free clinic and may be able to offer free somatic sessions to undocumented individuals unable to qualify for private, state or federal aid.
